When I popped this DVD into the player and began watching, my initial thought was "oh, boy, what did I waste my money on?" But I watched on, and it didn't take long for me to think that every major newspaper in every major city should consider producing a DVD like this for its collective sports history. This DVD was delightful. Please allow me a moment to tell you why I think so:First of all, I'm from New Hampshire and I've followed all these Boston teams for my whole 37 years. As a teen, I watched the sports report on all three major Boston stations at about 6:30 or so every night to keep up on the news and get a few different spins on a story.Although it starts out kinda "hokey," this DVD comes through with all of the big stories going back fifty years and in some cases, more. It brings back memories of the Bruins of the early 70's and Bobby Orr, the great sports championships of the Celtics, the quirky tales of the Patriots, and so many painful close calls from the Red Sox. It covers the tragedies of Lenny Bias and Reggie Lewis, Tony C., and the ball between Buckner's legs. It covers the 80 US Olympic Hockey team, the recent championships by the Patriots, and has a large section on "the Greatest Story of them All," the 2004 Red Sox comeback against the Yankees and World Series Victory against the Cardinals. And lots of little stuff that you might have forgotten about. Nancy Kerrigan's knee, the Ted Williams tribute at the '99 All Star Game, Harry Agganis. And it tells a ton of stories from the perspectives of the Boston Globe reporters -- and photographers -- who were there.I loaned this DVD to my parents recently, and my mother loved it. That's my MOM. They watched half of it one night and half of it the next. My wife really enjoyed it, too. It was nice because we could stop the DVD and talk about the event, what we remembered about it and where we were at the time. But, I digress; this really is an outstanding DVD of Boston Sports Memories, and I wish that every city could have such an offering for its sports fans.

The only downside of the DVD is that the producers didn't wait a few months before putting it together so they could have included the Patriots third and, arguably, most impressive Super Bowl title.Still, it is a great trip down memory lane brought to you by individuals (Boston Globe reporters) who often had the perfect seats as the historical events unfolded.Another plus is that the DVD does not focus solely on the Red Sox and everybody else. Basketball, football, hockey, golf, the marathon and other sports and events are all given their due. And, in doing so, those athletes involved are also given theirs (at least to the point time restraints would allow).Another strength is the insight into the personalities of some of Boston's greatest sports figures. Perhaps the best example of this inclusion, and a good example of way the DVD works, is reporter Dan Shaughnessy's retelling of his free throw competition with the great Larry Bird. The comical and predictable outcome gives a glimpse of Bird's character that can not be captured in standard coverage. A great bit.

This DVD was disapointing to me because I wanted to see the greatest games and series of Boston's history. Instead, it interviews the reporters about where they were and what they did when the saw the Buckner play or Vinatieri's kick. I live and breathe for Boston sports and this DVD bored me.

If you like lots of talking and pictures, then this is the DVD for you. I was expecting much more footage and excitment, something this DVD was sorely lacking. Instead of feeling the "goosebumps" I was yawning. I thought this was going to be more like the DVD "City of Champions: The Best of Boston Sports", but it was anything but. City of Champions uses music from bands like Aerosmith and Pearl Jam to bring the moments to life. Here, they just sit there. Almost unexciting. If you want a grandfather's tale of boston sports legends, then this is for you. If you want to scream into your TV and get out of your seat and cheer, then get City of Champions. It's by far the best Sports DVD I've ever seen.
